Today would have been the Pride in London event though, like so many events over the last few months, it was cancelled due to the COVID lockdown restrictions. My husband and I have gone through various stages over our many years together of being more and less active in terms of LGBTQ public events. Two years ago we marched in the main parade for the first time in many, many years and it was a very positive and affirmative experience.
Last year we had no specific plans, but it happened that my niece and her boyfriend came to visit on the weekend of Pride, so once again we were in the city centre during the height of the celebrations. We didn’t directly take part but still soaked up the very positive atmosphere whilst showing those relatives around some sights and shops.
This year though there is no choice to be in the city centre in a joyous crowd celebrating diversity. With all that is happening in the world I feel there is more need for advocacy and community than ever. For most of these three months our only socialising has been virtual, so I find myself wishing I could have attended pride today more than any year in recent memory.
The screenshots in this post show the three new pride bunnies in Everquest 2. This is the second year (to my knowledge) that we’ve had these free multi-coloured patchwork pets to help mark Pride within this MMORPG. It’s a small thing, but something I appreciate nonetheless, especially given this year’s circumstances.
We could try and find a virtual community event we could join later to mark the day in some fashion, but I spend *so* much of my working week on Zoom conferences I honestly do not know if I can face yet more web-conference time on the weekend…
