PS/4 – Diablo 3 and console MMO gaming

Blizzard have announced Diablo 3 is coming to Playstation 3 and Playstation 4 (the new console will launch late this year).

On paper this is of little to no interest to me, we didn’t even complete Diablo 3 on normal mode it was that boring. Blizzard doing a deal with Sony though might have deeper meaning. Does this mean Titan will be available on PS/4? I would say probably. Is the announcement of this deal the necessary preparation for Titan‘s announcement and preview at Blizzcon? Blizzcon is set for the 8th and 9th November – so by that point Diablo 3, at least, should be ready for demo on the Playstation.

The addition of the multiplay on console is a good move, though it’s nothing new of course.  Coming back to MMOs, Grav had a post recently about the dearth of console MMOs.

I’ve always liked the idea of playing a MMO on a console – in the more comfortable setting of couch + TV. But given that I generally play MMOs with my partner that’s not so practical. We’d need two Playstations and two televisions for that to work equally. I think this is a key problem with MMOs, the need for one computer per player is no big issue with PC gaming; many houses have multiple PCs/laptops nowadays. But multiple consoles and TVs and the practical requirement to be in separate rooms (for sound not to clash) would make the experience *less* social rather than more. We play MMOs together with our PCs desks side-by-side so it’s an inherently shared and social experience. The only adjustment necessary is to switch in-game music off on one of the games to avoid clashes. I can’t see that being remotely practical with a console unless the Playstation 4 could have 2 or more splitscreen MMO players on the same console…

Connect computer to TV with an HDMI cable. Connect wireless mouse and keyboard (or game controller) to computer. Sit on couch. Play computer on tv from comfort of couch.

Where does a console enter into this? 😉

That is our setup. Additional positive is we do not have to put up with the crappy console controllers. WASD+mouselook forever!

As I said in my post I mostly play with my partner, us both being in the same room. That wouldn’t work with two PCs connected to two TVs unless you were quite a distance apart. I’d be interested in the PS/4 if it somehow bridged the local multiplayer concept with online gaming for MMOs.

  3. I just don’t see the advantage of bringing Diablo 3 to the PS4, and the fact that they included it in their launch show seemed like filler to me. Why is this exciting? As you say, the PC version was boring enough, I can’t imagine how the PS4 will enhance it at all. Okay they’ll probably release some new content – and? Will that many people really want it?
