Allods: class change tokens for sale, by auction…

Allods is a game I will read news on despite not ever intending to go back to it. I played with friends in the open beta phase before the outrageous cash shop destroyed most of the community goodwill for this colourful and somewhat unique-flavoured MMORPG.

The publisher in the US has made news sites a couple of times recently, firstly for bucking the trend and opening a subscription only server (Massively article covering this). For a free to play at launch game, that’s refreshingly new (we’ll have to wait and see if it lasts mind).

Then more recently I read (via Massively article) that they’re adding class change tokens, other than DDO’s grind-tastic reincarnation system I’ve not seen many MMOs feature a class change mechanic. But rather than a simple paid for service or store-bought item, the devs put one token for each class (i.e. the class you want your character to become) onto the auction house and let the players have at it in a bit of economic PVP. A novel new way of sucking some gold out of the in-game economy I guess, but rather frustrating if you’re not a rich veteran or a gold-seller…
