Fun with combos in GW2

Since I’m generally playing GW2 with my partner, friends or family I spend 95% of my playtime grouped up as a duo, trio or more. Having people to play with whom I know and am used to playing with from other games has made it easy for us to experiment with the combo system.

Line-shaped fire combo starter field

So all classes have combo starter and combo finisher moves. Combo starters cover an area, such as the circular chaos storm (my favourite!) or the line-shaped flamewall above. Combo finishers when targeted at enemies inside or beyond the starter field will then trigger a combo effect (see the wiki link above for full details).

Lots of other players taking advantage of my poison combo field ability

It’s a nice system, not as involved as the fellowship maneuver system from LoTRO (which requires precise timing and order of ability execution) or the heroic opportunities system from EQ2. It does however require fast reflexes, awareness of surroundings and knowing when to keep skills free and when to use them.

In the chaos of mass-zerg events it’s harder to trigger them with any reliability. Since I know most mesmer skills pretty well now I can trigger my finisher the split second I hear another mesmer’s chaos storm land just from the distinctive sound effect. With other classes nearby it’s more random chance if I get a combo or not. Nevertheless I like the combo system, I’m sure that once I get more adept at other classes it will become progressively easier to use other classes combo fields to good effect.

To close I have a random shot from tonight’s session, one of over 400 screenshots I have so far taken in game. I continue to be in awe of ArenaNet’s artists….

Yes the building is as interesting to run around inside as it is awesome to look at from outside!
