Back and first impressions of GW2

I’m back from my travels, with pretty bad jet lag. But I wanted to post my first impressions from my first session in GW2.

Character creation is pretty detailed. I’ve not experienced Age of Conan’s or some of the other best of breed character creators but this one is miles better than the simple choices from Guild Wars 1!

Launching into the game with my partner (who is started in pre-launch so is a ‘vet’ compared to me) in the Asura area with my new Mesmer, I was immediately struck by the breathtaking beauty of the game. Not just the stunning scenery, the character animations so full of life but also even the ‘painted on canvas’ backgrounds of the NPC dialogues and load screens.

Mesmer: because you can’t have too much purple.

The game is a bit bewildering to play, despite all I’ve read, and how familiar the movement controls are. I was sat in game barely a minute and was discussing my first impressions with my partner when an event triggered and we were fighting rogue golems. As he commented at the time “this is very like Rift in a good way” – the game world has that feeling of ‘things going on’ which is great for our shared personal preference. We don’t want simple questing-on-rails, follow the trail to level cap gaming anymore. I suspect that might be what turned me off SWTOR in the end, Rift and its take on dynamic gameplay was really good fun to play – I’m hoping that GW2 will be even better!

Reunited and reincarnated

Asura are a really cool race, we’ve known since meeting Vekk in GW1 Eye of the North that we’d end up playing them. Here’s to many adventures to come!
